While I'm Waiting

In my last post, I talked about waiting for Baby. It seems like it's the last thing I think about before I lay down and the first thing when I wake up. "Is Baby going to come tonight?" "{Mental sigh} I guess this will be another day with our little one on the inside rather than the outside."

It also seems like everywhere I go, people keep saying, "Still haven't had that baby?" Or, "You're not supposed to be here!" Thanks. ;)

There's such an anticipation--especially with not knowing if this is a boy or a girl. We want to meet you!!! It's amazing how your mind becomes attuned to your body, watching for any signs of change, hoping for some progression toward the one you've been waiting for.

Today, it hit me:  "What if I thought about Christ's coming like I think about this baby coming?" I mean, can you imagine how life-changing that would be? If the last thing I thought about at night was, "I hope I get to see You (actually see You) tomorrow." Or, when I awake, "Thank You, God, for another day, another chance to live for You." What if my whole being was attuned to the Holy Spirit, if my mind and spirit were continually aware of the fleetingness of my time here? What if I longed to be wholly reunited with my Savior as I long to be with my child?

God, give me that kind of passion and focus.

On a related note, as a mother/mother-to-be, I find that it can already be easy to travel down the path of "what-ifs". "What if my baby's not moving as much today because he's not getting enough oxygen?" "What if my baby gets in the wrong position and they have to perform surgery?" Oh, and let's not forget, "What if I'm not a good mom?"

I think that there are some better "what-ifs" to think on (like the ones a couple paragraphs above). "What if I trusted God more?" "What if I slowed down and enjoyed this moment?" What if...

...I realized that waiting can be half the fun?

Anxiously Awaiting

I seriously keep thinking my next blog post will be about the arrival of our newborn.

And it's seriously not.

Perhaps it is time for some jumping jacks? Jordan suggested burpees, but that's a little out of my comfort zone right now. :)

We are anxiously awaiting our little one...we have six days left! The nursery is done (just waiting on Baby's dresser that Jordan is almost finished with!), the car seat is installed in our new four-door vehicle, and there are meals in the freezer to last us a couple of weeks. Still (sigh) baby seems more comfortable on the inside than on the outside--which, I can't honestly hold against him or her, since I would love to be curled up all day taking naps and practicing my kickboxing with someone else's bladder.

I know that many of you have been praying for us and watching for some sort of news, so I will try to at least post a photo with stats after Baby arrives as soon as I collect myself enough to think of it. In the meantime, I would love to share some of our pictures from our maternity shoot last month, taken by our wonderful friend, Diane.

And the Countdown Begins!

Can you believe it?!

We only have five weeks left until our baby's estimated date of arrival!

I have been meaning to post, but our computer got sick :( and then we have been busy, or I have been tired. Or pinning. :)

So, while I don't have time for an in-depth post, here are some photos to catch you up:

26 weeks on Christmas Day

I have expanded...a lot! We had to have a 32-week ultrasound to make sure everything was okay with Baby, since I have still been measuring ahead (hello! I am very short-waisted!). Everything is okay, and we do not take that for granted by any means. ...But at week 32, they estimated the baby's weight at 4 pounds 9 ounces. We'll see how the next five weeks go. :)

We are super excited to get maternity pictures taken today, and I will have to post them when I get them. I also have my first baby shower next week and one the week after that--totally thrilled! I miss having all of my friends together in one place.

In other news, there's snow on the ground! Hope we don't freeze to death today.... :)

Birthdays

Last week I celebrated my birthday, and, I have to say, I was dreading it for a few weeks. I knew that this birthday was not going to be what it could have been. Last summer, I thought I might be spending this one with our first child; or, if not that he would be with us soon after, as his due date was exactly seven days after my birthday.

A really good friend of mine sent me a little note in the mail several weeks ago asking me how I was doing. She wrote about how easy it would be to assume that because of the new joys in your life, you have left behind the old sorrows. But that's not always the case. I have been thinking about this a lot over the past few weeks and have spent the last week talking things over with Jordan and asking him all sorts of questions about how we are supposed to feel and...be in this situation.

What I was struggling with the most was the idea of honoring my little one's life in the years to come. I know that as time goes on, it will be hard to see what kind of a legacy he might have with such a short lifespan. God says that, for all of us, our life is but a vapor. So, what does that make eight weeks? Mostly, his impact will be on our lives. How we view God, ourselves, and our children. But I also hope to be open to however God wants to use me.

I have also struggled with the idea of embracing the joy of our child to come...without feeling like there is some betrayal of the one we lost. Don't get me wrong here--we are very, very excited to meet this little guy or girl in the upcoming weeks! But there were two examples I thought of for how these feelings could coexist.

First, I thought of those I know of who lost their husband or wife and God brought someone else into their lives. The new spouse does not replace or diminish the love and loss of the first. But neither does the sorrow of the first diminish the joy of the second. If anything, it deepens and richens it because the bruised heart understands love in a new way and knows not to take it for granted.

Second, I thought of Job. Oh, Job...he was far from perfect; yet, he knew suffering most will never know. Job lost all of his animals (his livelihood), his servants, and his children--seven sons and three daughters. The book details how he dealt with his sorrows, his questions about his life, and his questions about God. Forty chapters later, Job confesses and repents to God:
“I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. ‘Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you make it known to me.’ I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”
God restored all of Job's fortunes--doubling them, in fact. He also gave him seven sons and three daughters and allowed him to live to see his great-great grandchildren. Job came out of his sorrow a new man with a deeper relationship with God. Did he still have heart-stopping moments where he remembered holding his first child for the very fist time? I don't see how he didn't. Did he look at his wife and see the life they had had and lost? I think so. But he also rejoiced in a God who had intimately made himself known to him, and he embraced the new family he had been given. He was a different husband, father, and friend. Job was changed...for the better.

And so I think that I can wholeheartedly rejoice in our little munchkin to come and know that one of the best ways I can honor our first child is by loving those I have with me here all the more.

I still wanted to do something else to honor our little one's life. I asked one of my friends, Mollie, right after everything happened to make me a scrapbook page of the few things that I could put together. She blew me away with how creative and personal her gifts were:

A shadowbox to hang on our wall

She also surprised me with a notebook she bound containing all of my blog entries from that time, a poem a friend gave me, and an excerpt from Psalm 139. I take it out every once in a while and reread it and I cry...but it's a good cry because it's good to remember. My favorite page is this one:

We love you, Asher Matthias, and we look forward to telling your brother or sister all about you!

The War is Already Won

On my way home from work today, I was listening to this song...

Battle by Chris August on Grooveshark

...and I was totally hit by the lyrics.

They are not very complex. They are all words that have been said before. But, sometimes, God needs to slam a concept into the front of your brain. That's when you have one of those, "Ohhhh...." moments.

I love the fact that I can claim this song as true in my life--so many things are vying for my heart, but Christ already fought and won the battle long ago on the cross. Oftentimes, we are confronted with a prosperity gospel, but there is a very certain lie at the heart of the message: "You just need to follow God a certain way, and then He will bless you so that your bank accounts will be overflowing because that is who He is and what He can do." He CAN do that. He just never promised that He would.

Instead, He promised that He would care for us, just as He cares for all of His creatures and instructed us to focus on obeying Him and our impact on eternity (Matthew 6:25-33). To Israel, God often promised abundance of crops and food and children, but for disciples of Christ we are not promised such earthly things; yet, we are assured of an abundance of these three things (at least):
  1. Life
"I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." --John 10:9-11
  2. Joy
" These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full." --John 15:11
"Though you have not seen [Christ], you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls." --1 Peter 1:8-9
  3. Power
"For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." --2 Timothy 1:7
"The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain." --1 Corinthians 15:56-58
It can be so easy to feel like we are failing and we are the only ones who don't have it all together. But we know that the hard part--the battle--has already been fought for us. We just need to live in light of that victory!
